The Rig is Derek Wax and Wild Mercury Productions’ new six-part Amazon Original series. With Iain Glen, Emily Hampshire and Martin Compston leading a strong cast, the series follows the crew of the North Sea stationed Kinloch Bravo oil rig and their fight for survival as a mysterious fog rolls in, leaving them stranded and cutting off all communication with the shore. All six episodes are available now on Amazon Prime Video and as Benji Wilson wrote for The Telegraph, “You should, and will, gobble The Rig up like a tin of Quality Street.”
The character-driven mystery thriller explores the fear of the unknown, utilising its oil rig setting to create a tension permeated by isolation. We follow Magnus, Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) and rig boss, as he attempts to lead his fractured crew through the evolving crisis. Tensions and paranoia rise, as the rig’s systems fail, all efforts to restore contact with the mainland are crushed and a devastating accident brings them all face-to-face with the deadly dangers of one of the most extreme working environments on the planet. The story develops alongside the characters
and relationships are tested as the pressure increases and the crew finally discover the scale of the power that they have awoken and the danger it poses to all those that they’ve left behind on land.
First time scriptwriter, David MacPherson, grew up in the Scottish town Alness near the North Sea facing coast. His father worked on an offshore platform for years, often returning with stories of inexplicable happenings. MacPherson himself has been involved with organisations working to mitigate the climate crisis since his MA in environmental studies and the series does not shy away from these profound global issues. The Rig intelligently explores environmental issues, as well as issues surrounding workers’ rights, with Lucy Mangan of the Guardian noting, “Eco-consciousness suffuses the story (“We’re fossils digging fossils”) without demonising those who look to polluting industries for work.”
The Rig is available in almost one hundred languages and the Polish audio is high quality dubbing. The series is well written, well produced and well directed, resulting in a compellingly made thriller that is brought to life by a talented cast. There are many questions left unanswered by the end of the sixth episode, but the biggest one:
